Nothing like a new edition to get me spending.
And this is nothing like a new edition, really! It's the inevitable evolution of the last one, here for our hearts and wallets. Has it really only been three years since Leviathan?
I’d have to admit to feeling very passive about the incoming rules. The previewed stuff all seems fine, some sensible tweaks to flyers and reintroducing scenery as a game element rather than a series of screens to hide behind, yes yes yes all well and good.
Rejigging charge moves so that it makes no particular difference? Complex new mission system? Special new bases for your scenery? Multi-detachments so bits of the army have different rules? Why not just put it on the datasheet, GW? Wasn’t all this crunch exactly what 10th ed was supposed by be cutting down on?
Oh, I don’t even want answers. I’ll play it! Of course I will, but I’ll be rolling my grognard eyes all the while. The new Space Marine stuff symbolises my reaction pretty neatly. Seen it before, don’t need new ones, let’s get on with things.
Something of a surprise to find myself retrofitting my land speeder, then, but here we are, the paint queue is down and there’s evenings to fill.
My Typhoon is about to be outdated. Sticking a heavy flamer on the bottom and swapping the heavy bolter for a multimelta was about an hour’s work total and easily achieved with bits from the box. I did a quick extra layer of highlights too, so the whole thing has had a glow-up. I could imagine myself waiting for a while and then perhaps trying to snaffle a cheap new one once people are selling them off on ebay.
You never know with new editions, really. Sometimes it swings you round and gets you back in the hobby, sometimes the opposite. Even after so long in the hobby, it's hard to know which way it might go! I'm in a good place either way, I've got enough in the cupboards that I'm not going to be investing much more into it, but considering the odd bit here and there to adjust what I have to fit. Playing more is still really my goal, and I'm sure there will be enough others looking to find out how the new rules play that I can achieve that.
Nearly the summer holidays, too! And luckily, an incoming commission to keep me busy...
