See a bandwagon, jump on it, I say.
It's been a long while since the Hagan Lampreys had anything added to them. The last gasp of an edition is probably not a great time to do that, but the newest Armageddon stuff managed to grip me somehow. Or somewhere, at least, probably the wallet.
The halftracks and the armoured car thingy are both pretty WWII-looking. Works for me - they will be appearing at some time in the summer, I think, after some commission work. For now, I treated myself to an actual named character!
It's based on the Centaur kit, from looking at the sprue. Same chassis, different armour plates along the right side and over the tracks. Plus that huge eagle prow, which gives it a profile like a locomotive. It's very Warhammery, custom name badges and rivets everywhere. "Looks like Santa's sleigh," said Mrs Kraken in passing, rapt as ever by the grimdark world. Further consideration made me realise it also looks like the Thundertank. No wonder I fancied it.
Painted in the same grubby white the rest of the Lampreys have, I think she'll make a decent addition. Her ability is to give extra orders from a shortened list to people getting out of tanks nearby. My mechanised Scions do that quite a lot anyway. Extra OC or more move are both good options. She can also shout at tanks (in the new detachment that's made for her, at least) and let them scoot off a d6" if baddies get too close.
The chaps in the back are all loose. That bannerman is a liability, so having him removable seemed key. In fact I've broken him once already by reaching for the water jar and missing, so I've made the right choice. The gunners are fine, they can slot in and out as needed, but the others have a combo of magnets and paperclip spikes so I can take them out for storage.
You get an extra model with this set. Graves on foot seemed like one named character too many, so this head and arm swap is Commissar Josephus Haart, survivor of the original Drawbridge campaign. Commissars can't really take massive combat shotguns, but I won't tell him if you don't.
Picking him up from the store netted me a free Votan too, one I already have as a melta gunner for the Ironhead Squats. This one has a head swap, an old Frostgrave barbarian like the Commissar, and I think he'll be an abhuman adjutant of some kind. I could claim he's a visiting priest of some flavour, I'm sure the Ecclesiarchy welcomes ecumenical exchanges.
Paint queues set to idle again, as I try and digest the news that GW is going to make pre-painted terrain. Looks fantastic, bound to be absurdly expensive. I've already pre-judged anyone buying it from the safe heights of my hand-made and hand-painted scenery heap. Time well spent!
