"Alexa, show me a visual representation of 'A day late and a dollar short'..."
My Gravis Armour obsession has taken a wrong turn.
So these are my Chaos Obliterators - and in fairness when I started kitbashing these together last year, they were a great improvement on the existing Finecast models - larger, more imposing, better guns etc...
And then the Shadowspear landed last month, and with it, a whole new design of plastic Obliterators, which are a great improvement on my efforts - larger, more imposing, better guns etc...
But I won't grumble. I had a lot of fun building these, they were a lot cheaper than the new ones, and I get some crazy-good rules for these models!
The base for these models are the Easy-to-Build Primaris Aggressors, which have been modified by pieces from the Chaos Helbrute and whatever odds and sods I had from the Chaos Terminator Lord, Chaos Space Marines, Blightlord Terminators, Scarab Occult Terminators, Raptors, Rubric Marines, Imperial Guard Squad and Heldrake. And green stuff.
A further wrinkle was that the base size of the Obliterators had gone up from 40mm to 50mm, so I took the simple expedient of slapping one base on top of another and building up a small scenic base around them.
I'm not great at scenic bases (too much like painting terrain - shudder), but I think they came out okay. The advantage is that it makes them a bit taller, which helps to bring them a little closer to the scale of the new guys.
In terms of painting, I followed the same style as the Helbrute, since they're spiritual cousins:
For those who like their narrative, these could be a trio of Aggressors who've become a bit too keen on shooting their weapons and become ensnared by the Dark Prince - even Primaris are not immune to chaos!
So that's my trio done. They may not look like the new guys, but they'll mow you down you just the same.

Of course they're aligned to Slaanesh Endless Cacophony is not to be sniffed at. |

- Gold armour: Retributor Armour base, Agrax Earthshade wash
- Black armour: Chaos Black base, Ironbreaker drybrush, Chaos Black layer,
- Skin: Rakarth Flesh base, Reikland Flesh wash, Pallid Wych Flesh layer
- Outside Flesh: Rakarth Flesh base, Reikland Flesh wash, thinned Typhus Corrosion wash
- Horns: Khone Red base, Nuln Oil wash, Evil Sunz Scarlet layer
- Cables: Averland Sunset base, Agrax Earthshade wash

I really like them! The new ones are smart too, but look so unlike the previous ones they almost ought to be a different model. Like the new uber-possessed guys, a tier up the mutant ladder.
ReplyDeleteYes, they seem to be the evolutionary missing link between Oblits and Helbrutes.
DeleteA new unit would have been cool - but I guess GW is saving up all the names ending in '-or' for the Primaris and Stormcast releases.
Great work Stylus! I really like the result! These guys look mean, but also like they'd get upset if someone stole their kill shot.
ReplyDeleteCheers, I just had to use up all the extra Helbrute faces - those guys look so tortured!
DeleteRegardless of the new Models, these have a couple of things going for them. First, they do, inherently, look pretty frickin' awesome. And secondly, no one else is going to have Oblits that look quite like them. Great work!
ReplyDeleteThanks - you're right, I think I would have converted this lot even after the new kits came out. There is something very satisfying about taking a model and slapping a ridiculous amount of guns on it!
