Who says a filthy heretic can't dream of being Superman?
Having completed the Plasma Raptors last month, it was time to finish off their melta-wielding brothers.
I've not had many games with Raptors, but I'm starting to pick up the nuances of them as deepstrikers (compared to, for example, playing Tempestus Scions as special weapon suicide squads).
Their toughness and power armour makes them more survivable, and their jump packs give them mobility even after they've dropped in. So once they've landed and unloaded their first shots, they're still free to make a nuisance of themselves (or divert firepower to getting rid of them).
Equipping them with melta guns is perhaps more questionable than good old reliable plasma (which reliably blows up, admittedly). It's an expensive weapon for just a single shot - but they're such a potential threat to heavily-armoured, multi-wound targets that your opponent is not going to rest easy until they've been dealt with.
Same colour scheme the rest of the Black Legion:
I gave the champion a power fist (because that's also good for cracking high-armoured, multi-wound targets, so should synchronise with the meltas). Although given it has a modifier to hit, and can't trigger Death to the False Emperor, it's about as a reliable as a melta - so the whole squad packs a huge amount of potential damage, just not terribly reliable.
And with that, my painted Black Legion is approaching the 1500pt mark and now starting to become the force I envisioned: mobile and hard-hitting.
I'm probably going to (mostly) sidestep this new fashion for daemonkin models. The rules are very tasty, but I'm looking for a list of traitors in power armour. After all, they are who they chose to be.

I must go! My people need me!
ReplyDeleteIn a lot of ways, fast Melta in 8th is less about its actual effectiveness, and more about it's potential threat. Your opponent can't afford to assume that you're going to get average rolls when you make that strike, so they have to devote resources to taking them out, or at least fending them off. The more you can make them spend on that, the bigger the advantage they can give you over the rest of their Army.
You're right. I'm finding that the fire they can draw is useful for letting other stuff survive. Really enjoying the options that the Heretic Astartes are opening up for me.
