I Tormentor Do It

 Stuff to paint!

Kas's latest commish arrived last week. After a month with barely two models to my name (store freebies), I've dived in with both feet.

It's a reasonably-sized Emperor's Children army, the shiny new ones! Ranks of all the infantry, along with some rather nifty resin pieces and a few conversions to spice it all up. According to the official rules of engagement, I'm starting with the largest blocks of troopers and working up towards anything more gnarly.

Tormentors got to go first. They're the ones with bolters who infiltrate ahead of the others. Every battle report I've seen so far has them wiped off the table on round one, seemingly whether they infiltrate or not. Maybe that's their special once-a-battle rule, I'm not sure. They do come with a pair of special weapons per five, so they can dent stuff in theory. At least they give enough of an impression they might, hence the focus fire!

If you're going to fill your map rake with casualties early on, may as well make them nice ones, though. These certainly fit the bill - spikes in all the right places, lots of elegant twiddly bits and plenty of studded leather.

We've gone purple and white for the overall scheme:

  • Undercoat: Wraithbone spray
  • Purples: Leviadon Purple contrast, layers and highlights with Xereus Purple mixed with varying amounts of White Scar
  • White Trim: Nuln Oil over the overcoat, White Scar edge highlight
  • Blacks: Black Templar contrast and then leave it alone
  • Leather: Altdorf Flesh, Flesh Wash, Barbarian Flesh layer, Elven flesh drybrush
  • Skin: Slaanesh Grey, Flesh Wash, Slaanesh Grey blended up towards Pallid Wych Flesh
  • Gold: Balthazar Gold, Carroberg Crimson, Greedy Gold highlights and Golden Griffon drybrush
  • Greens: Wizard's Orb, Coelia Greenshade, Neon Green, Neon Green plus either White Scar or Neon Yellow
  • Reds: Blood Angel Red contrast, Pure Red and Wild Rider Red layers, Elven Flesh edge highlight
  • Gemstones from my little box of tiny stick-on rhinestones. The ones in the headgear are made of two stuck back-to-back and then PVA'd into place.
  • Bases: Locally sourced sand plus watered-down Tau Light Ochre, Army Painter jungle tufts

Probably took about twelve hours overall - they are very detailed, so no chance of dirty drybrush or slapchop shortcuts. It got a bit tired by the end. The one disadvantage of the newer GW kits is their bodies repeat across a squad of five, so you're doing multiples of the same greebles.

The last bloke is a resin guy, Forge World Emperor's Children Legion Praetor with some mild tweaks. I like his spear and his natty half-cloak, very fetching. He'll be playing as a Lord Exultant, I should imagine, leading an infantry unit for extra melee punch.

That's the first block sorted - Infractors next, so more of the same. Hurrah!
