Harder Stern

The Leviathan boxset!

I've reached the good bits of the commission now. First underway was a double unit of the new Sternguard vets (Kas had swapped out his Ballistus Dreadnought for more troopers), and jolly good they are too.

They are quite similar to an upscaled squad of the older vets, all in all. Not massively inspiring, maybe, but also kind of comforting to paint. Like old friends, familiar and cheering without needing to be challenging or edgy.

These were mostly done with Black Templar contrast over Wraithbone spray, but I did push myself to the extra mile of Ulthaun Grey edge highlight. Not bad, although my technique is too rough to be really neat, and there was no intermediate shading so it's a bit too stark. It leaves them nice and crisp, and it also leaves me definitely not about to do the same for the Infernus squaddies (who are next).

Two lots of the same sculpts, so very slight paint variations - some have yellow knees, some have red pack tops. And the Sarges got a little extra glow-up, a spare PuppetsWar head and a hand swap. Nothing mad, just enough to stay fun.

One hero per batch is my general rule, so here's the Combi-Lieutenant. I like to think the Crypt Angels hunted round the galaxy to find a breed of Tyranids that would complement their armour colours. Style is just as important as victory over the xenos swarms.

Next!

  1. They look good; reminds me of a video that Sam put on YouTube where he recommended exactly what you've done: skip intermediate highlights and have a stark edge highlight. And copying his method is no bad thing!
