Wobbly Bits

Time for a new project!

Actually, it's more of a teaser for a project. Deep Madness is a game of Lovecraftian horror set on a deep sea 'science' facility overrun with writhing monstrosities. Having backed the Kickstarter under the auspices of doing some painting for Kasfunatu, I've been looking forward to getting the 200-odd gribblies that come with it. And now they're here!

First up is Dimensional Rift, who didn't get the part in Stranger Things and now finds itself moonlighting as an exotic pole dancer. Nicely freakish, although I must admit I was expecting something taller! The images on the Kickstarter page made me expect this at roughly Ogre size or more, although looking back at them this is purely the lens of miniature collector's greed. As it is, it's about the size of a Space Marine, and the scenic base is a nice bonus.

Number two is the Devourer of Worlds. Again, smaller than I hoped, it's roughly a tennis ball (and quite a rough tennis ball, too) rather than the Great Unclean One I was kidding myself it might be. Still a corker of a spawn, though. I mean, look at those profiles! It works from any angle!

Painting Guides:

  • Upper Dimension Rift - Xereus Purple, Druchii Violet, Genestealer Purple drybrush, Khorne Red and Evil Suns Scarlet tips, 'Ardcoat over the lot
  • Lower Dimension Rift - Incubi Darkness, Incubi Darkness+Rakarth Flesh Drybrush, 'Ardcoat
  • Stone Pillars - Black, Incubi Darkness blended with Eshin Grey, Pallid Wych Flesh drybrush
  • Glow - Same purples as the upper body blended up to white
  • Devourer of Worlds Flesh - Stegadon Scale Green, Nuln Oil, same green blended up with Ahriman Turquoise and White, Skink Blue highlights, heavy Drakenhof Nightshade wash
  • Green Blisters - Caliban Green, Kabalite Green up to White, 'Ardcoat
  • Tentacles - Kislev Flesh with Carroberg Crimson and Agrax washes, then Kislev Flesh and Eldar Flesh drybrushes, then Carroberg again, then a bit of BftBG to finish
  • Teeth and Scales - Skavenblight Dinge, Nuln Oil Gloss, Warpfiend Grey blended to Pallid Wych Flesh, more Nuln Oil Gloss, a touch of Praxeti White, 'Ardcoat
  • Mouths - Screamer Pink, Druchii Violet, Screamer Pink plus Wazdakka Red

But alas - only these two are with me so far. I actually backed them myself, but the rest sits in Kasfunatu's Lair, ready to be picked up at a later date. Which is looking like next year, so a hiatus approaches in terms of projects. An opportunity to either start something new or (groan) work through the backlog. This means either plenty of Reaper Bones stuff to do, they've been malingering for a while, or getting on with some scenery. Decisions, decisions...

  1. The first one is my fave. The paint job you got on there is really cool and creepy.

They do kind of seem like they should be on 40mm and 60mm bases, respectively. Kickstarter expectation inflation is definitely a thing. I really got hit hard by it on the Empire of Men one I backed last year. What I got in the mail was really unimpressive, but when I scaled the pics on the Kickstarter pages so the bases were the right size, they did match up perfectly.

    1. Don't get us started on Kickstarter Expectations. Stylus and I both got stung by the Dark Age Settlement one a couple of years back, when we were playing Saga. That has petered out in a hopeless haze with no delivery of anything the final result! So if these are kind of the wrong size, I shouldn't really be grumbling.

Looking forward to doing more of them in due course!
