Through Tyranny, Freedom

Order's up!

Last bit of commissioning work for a while, this magnetised Hive Tyrant completes a batch of work for Leofa.

There's actually a bulk of Tyrannic stuff I've done for him, partly through Space Hulk and more loosely through his Genestealer Cultists. This is the boss of all of them, and as such had to match a number of unrelated paint jobs.

The original plan was to do it like Aliens, a simple slick black and silver that I was looking forward to doing. But at the last minute, Leofa changed his mind, taking colours from the three other sets of 'stealers and leaving them to me to marry together.

So one lot were blue and purple, good old original style. The GSC are black and red with dark brown skin and the Space Hulk lot had green carapaces with bone underneath. Purple, Black and Bone was my palette for this challenge.

Naturally, I paid as little attention as I could (I still wanted a Geiger look!) and turned immediately to my colour shift paints. That actually gives even more of the look, as it's purple and green both at once. And shiny! Everybody happy!

Two sets of hips, one torso, two heads and all the limbs gives this chameleon the ability to be Walkrant, Flyrant or Swarmlord. All the weapon options are covered. Only the wings need a bit of fixing, they really are huge.

At the moment, their weight means they do exactly what Flyrants do on the table, i.e. you can't hide them behind a tree, so they get shot off by your opponent. Nothing a pin or further magnets (or 9th Ed Terrain rules!) won't fix, of course. In case more work needs doing, here's the paints list:

  • Undercoat - black
  • Outer Shell - Two layers of Martian Green with 'Ardcoat after the final varnish
  • Skin - Xereus Purple layered with Genestealer Purple and a tiny Lucius Lilac drybrush, then Nuln Oil Gloss and Druchii Violet washes
  • Undershell - Administratum Grey and Ash Grey highlighting over the basecoat
  • Bone Spurs - XV88 with Crackle Medium (which failed to produce, sadly, but still gave the long blades a little extra texture), Ushabti Bone and Tyrant Bone drybrushes then a Seraphim Sepia wash, then small bits of White drybrushing
  • Eyes and Veins - Wazdakka Red and Wild Rider Red
  • Base - Astrogranite texture paint (or, well, Agrellan Badland painted Stone Grey, I ran out of Astrogranite half way through), Nuln Oil, Longbeard Grey drybrush

That done, I am now a free man! Luckily, I've built up quite the backlog of other projects that I'm really looking forward to getting stuck into, and it'll be a while before my next commission arrives (Indomitus Marines for the Crypt). First, however, a couple of weeks of holiday. See you all later!
