Let Trygons be Trygons

Good to finish a project on a big model.

That's the last of my Hive Fleet Afanc reinforcements done. That recent match against Rapid made me re-evaluate the Trygon, which I'd always felt a bit sneery about before. Too frail, too expensive, not quite hard hitting enough - the usual list of complaints about any Tyranid monster, in fact. But seeing a Prime in action converted me!

This was another eBay find, part of the same box as the Genestealers, Termagants and a Carnifex. And in excellent condition too, hardly used I think. A lone talon had snapped off, which was replaced by a clippered Warrior claw that I kept knocking off again during painting, and I think its tongue might be missing a spur? But I left that as it was in the end.

Yes, it's smashing that dead tree.
So it's a Tree Gone.

What I did do was tear one of the lower scythes off and twist it round to fit against the smashed tree I made. That's just a local stick, sawn in half (I did try to snap it but failed my strength test dismally) and then distressed artfully before being drilled and posed with a wire core to hold it at a broken angle. The flying splinters are a bit too small and tame to really look like its bursting apart, but it's better with them than without.

Finally, I had leftover milliput from another modelling project, so I made a mini spawning pool for the base, along with a few jungle offcuts.

This ambush horror is, so long as it lands its charge, a pretty nasty piece of work. Even more so if it's being used as a Prime (they look so similar I can't really tell them apart. This might actually be a Prime, for all I know!), they have a lot of powerful attacks. Best used in a Jormungandr hive fleet, where they can bring others along in their tunnels, it might not last long after appearing, but it's going to attract a lot of attention while it's there.

And that's Hive Fleet Afanc done, for now! They might get Biovores and Lictors one day, and I'm going to be very interested to see what comes with the next Codex. But 3500 points is more than enough to be going on with. They do need a fresh full army shot at some point, though...

  1. Fantastic big beastie. Worth it for the pun alone.

  2. Nicely done, and I love that scenic base. Definitely one of my favourite recent puns (although they're consistently good, even when they're bad!).

  3. If puns were victory points, I'd be the king of 40K.

  4. Top notch work mate. The prime did a lot of work in our game, those metal boys didn't stand a chance
