No Sons of Mine

 It's Summer Commission Time!

Kas has gone for Thousand Sons this year. He sent over just under three thousand points, which ought to keep me busy through the holidays. Very nice they are too - the Rubrics all have resin heads, proper canopic jar ones. It's all very Stargate, hawks, bulls, crocodiles and jackals.

The post wasn't particularly kind to them. They weren't quite ground down to their constituent dust, but there were a lot more bits that came out of the box than Kas put in. I had a jolly weekend playing 3D jigsaw with them to put them back together.

12: Teleporter mishap

Once that was done, I was straight into the painting. Pre-undercoated, and the brief was cold white armour with gold trim, not too much blue please and pink tabards to match the Pink Horrors they'll be marching alongside later.

And here the first ones are, a week and a bit later! The next one might have a different starting process, these came out perhaps a little drybrushy rather than slapchoppy, but getting the white right to paint the rest round is always going to be tricky. I followed a variation of my usual Corax/Nuln Oil/Ulthuan/White Scar, swapping the black wash for Pylar Glacier instead.

The pauldrons were fun. I like the Egyptian stripes, I'm looking forwards to the Scarab Occult. Insignia were worrying me, though - Kas was asking for gold shoulders, I tried a couple of testers with blue instead on the grounds that the yellow ouroboros transfers he'd sent might not stand out enough. Further tests convinced me that gold shoulder circles definitely looked better, but that the transfers did blend in rather.

Putting round transfers on a round pauldron is a tricky job anyway. I used a hairdryer to melt them on a bit, a trick I've learned from Monkey, then painted the middle circle in black. That does the job, I reckon, they've got creepy shoulder holes. Makes me feel like I've freehanded something on them without having to do (for example) many winged mouths.

They are a bit of an assembly line, appropriately monopose as they plod across the sand. The Sorcerers that lead these two Rubric units help break it up a lot, plenty of flair and flappy pink scarves to bring out.

Finally, a Daemon Prince. I usually leave big stuff until later in the commission, but I got impatient with this glorious chicken man. I painted his cousin (winged) for the Emperor's Children last year, it's a lovely model. Definitely a Pink Horror with a promotion, on account of having mastered the rare Green Fire of Tzeentch.

More when I've done them!
