EXT: Desert Colony

In the Grim Darkness of the Far Future, there are always Prefab Buildings.

More of the TTCombat good stuff! These are buildings I've sort of done before, Building A here at least. Takes about ten or fifteen minutes to build, once you know the ropes, and it's a nice straightforward paint job too.

This time round, for the Stylus Desert theme, I used a mix of Burnt Sienna acrylic paint with a jar of Galeria Large Grain Gel. This is a thick clear acrylic goo with chunky bits in, perfect to mix with any acrylic paint, and drying to a nice consistency for giving the MDF some texture. It went on all over the outside walls - I didn't add in the inner ones, which were painted another colour, until after that was done.

After that, some washes (Reikland Fleshshade) and drybrushes (mostly Karak Sand and Pallid Wych Flesh, a touch of white), then a little dash of weathering powder before varnish.

Building D is the same as the Building C I've already done two of for the Jungle Compound. Much harder to make, though, it's got a lot of extra detail! Some of which didn't work - it should have sticky out bits along the sides, but they're made of thin grey card and it warped terribly when I painted it. After checking with the owner, I pulled it off.

Looks good, stronger and more solid than the others, with some great bits of detail. The only thing I added was clear plastic windows, glued on after the drybrushing stage (and before the roof went on) and a couple of printed posters.

That and some roof furniture, anyway, which is made by gluing some of the press-out bits from the windows together. You end up with a lot of spare bits from the sprue, and it seems a shame to waste it all!

Three more buildings to go, then I'll be posting up the Jungle stuff at long last. Unless I get distracted again!

  1. Fairly simple, but it looks good and does the job. Good stuff!

    1. Yeah, it's nothing elaborate. But for a tenner apiece, who's complaining!
