It's been a quiet January, but not for lack of effort.
From now, until they're finished, we shall be painting Space Wolves!
I've been hankering to build a small Primaris force, mostly because it makes a good 'guest army'. And since Mrs Stylus picked the arch-nemesis of my Thousand Sons, I thought I'd lean into it.
The plan for this army - after agonising over filigree armour, blended skin tones and feathers - was just to get it done, quick and simple.
Luckily, these Primaris models are a joy to paint, and even a basic paint job looks tabletop acceptable.
Some of these pieces come from the Space Wolves Primaris upgrade sprue - which I have a few complaints about. It's a wee sprue, and over half of it is given over to embossed pauldrons - enough for five Intercessors and three Aggressors.
That's really not enough pauldrons to kit out any army - and it wastes a lot of space that could have been better spent on: extra heads, wolf-talismans, or some more close-combat weapons. All you currently get is one chainsword, which isn't enough to share around the Pack Leaders.
And since Primaris Sergeants can now take power fists - which are extra-handy for Space Wolves, with their +1 to hit - I gave my Pack Leader a spare Aggressor fist.
I equipped both squads with Auto Bolt Rifles - more expensive and, thanks to the Beta Bolter rule - far less effective.
But rule-of-cool overrode me here - I think the magazines look awesome, and it suits my idea for this army that the infantry should be advancing quickly over the field (it's not like they have Rhinos!)
So, to painting them in short order, I primed the whole models with The Fang:
So that's two packs completed for The Rout. I aim to get them finished before winter ends!

- Pouches: Dryad Bark
- Base: Vajello Earth Texture, Agrax Earthshade wash, Mounfang Brown lip
So that's two packs completed for The Rout. I aim to get them finished before winter ends!

ReplyDeleteSide note - how do you pronounce 'Russ', as in 'sons of'? I'd always gone with standard UK to rhyme with 'us' but I'm now hearing it lile 'roose' in a computer game. Wrong or cool?
I've always pronounced it like you, but now I think about it, the "roose" pronunciation is probably correct. Most, maybe all, Scandinavian and Germanic languages pronounce "u" that way.
Delete'Roose'!? - I've never heard of anything more wrong!

I'm with you in this. Even though Roose sounds cooler (and in Swedish, at least, the double S makes it a short vowel), 'Leman Roooose' just sounds weird.
DeleteLooking good! SW are one of a number of Chapters that you can do really nice looking tabletop paint jobs on fairly easily. And Winter is a very appropriate time to be painting them!
ReplyDeleteIt's not actually necessary to commit to one variety for the Bolt Rifles. The bit that differentiates the three types can pressure fit, and be totally swappable, especially if you prime them separately.
Intercessors and Hellblasters can use old-style shoulder pads, so the "classic" SW Upgrade Kit is pretty usable as well. The only thing that's really not usable is the alternate torso bit with a wolf cloak. And technically, Intercessor Sergeants can only take Power Swords, but that's stupid. SW Sarges should totally be able to take Power Axes if they want. There's another Chainsword on there, too.
Thanks - I'll take a look at the other upgrade kit (I don't know why they're all so full of shoulder pads, though).
