Scourging Havoc!

The Purge got a new heavy option, so of course The Scourge wanted one too...

"It's okay sarge, the safety's on Old Betsy..."

Another new Chaos Space Marine kit! (I'm doing well for someone who vowed not to be drawn in - at least I haven't got the Lord Discordant yet)

As with the regular marines, these Havocs are splendid new models, especially the guns (of which you get plenty in the box, so I'll find a good use for the others soon enough).

My my detachment of Scourged are really piling up the lascannons (a consequence of their one-hit reroll - maybe the next squad needs to have some meltas), and this is another two in the squad, plus a couple of autocannons for some cheaper guns at the same range.

I think the autocannon may be the best heavy weapon in the CSM arsenal.
It helps that it also looks the business.

Like with the Obliterators, I'm ambivalent about their new datasheet - increased toughness and the ability to move and fire is good, but you lose the option of taking five more bolter-armed Havocs as ablative wounds. And, aside from moving out of cover or transport, your long-range firepower should really be standing still at the back.

And, as a modelling quibble - their increased toughness comes with a larger base size, meaning you can't make them interchangeable with the heavy weapon marines in your squad (well, you can, but the bases don't match, which would drive me crazy. I'm chaotic, but there is a limit).

Still, hard to be cross when the the boomsticks are this lovely. I'm sure I'll cope with the new world.

And finally, the Champion - aka The Guy Who Always Gets Removed First.

The actual Champion in the kit is so impressively posed, I wanted to keep him for better things, which meant this Chosen from the Dark Imperium box set got a promotion. He looks decent enough with a bolter and chainsword ... and he may not be on the table for long anyway!

"Middle management sucks."

Same paint scheme as before - and the freehand chapter symbol hasn't driven me mad (yet):

  • Gold trim: Retributor Gold base, Reikland Fleshshade wash, Golden Griffin drybrush
  • Red armour: Wazzdakka Red base, Carroburg Cromson wash, Wazzdakka Red layer
  • Blue Armour: Kantor Blue base, Nulk Oil wash, Kantor Blue layer, Altdorf Guard Blue highlights
  • Cloth: Khorne Red base, Nuln Oil wash, Mephiston Red highlights
  • Straps: Zandri Dust base, Snakebite Leather contrast
  • Pipes, straps & gun barrels: Ironbreaker base, Nuln Oil wash
  • Bullets: Runelord Brass + Xv88 base, Agrax Earthshade wash
  • Eye lenses: Ulthun Grey base, Hexwraith technical
  • Freehand symbol: Grey Seer

And this will (maybe?) be the last of my detour into Renegade Astartes. From here on, it's Black Legion all the way!

  1. Lovely stuff as always. I wish I'd thought to keep my champion for other duties; still, he could always be repurposed in the future.

    1. What loadout did you go for with the Havocs? Or did you work magic with magnets?

    2. Entirely magnetised! Although I only have two who can have either a missile launcher or lascannon and two who choose between the rest.

    3. That is very impressive (yes, I noticed the sculpts don't allow the guns to be fully-interchangeable).

  2. Love those colours, they really look like 80s cartoon villains!

    1. The colours are what hooked me into this chapter.

But I draw the line at making a twirly moustache from greenstuff.

  3. Kablamo! They look fab.

...so when will The Unkindest Cut welcome a Lord Discordant to their ranks?

    1. I'm thinking a daemon engine Lord like him would be more at home among the Brazen Beasts renegades ... am I mad enough to start another chapter?

    2. Heed the poorly applied words of David Attenbourgh: 'Anyone who believes in indefinite growth in anything physical, on a physically finite planet, is either mad – or an economist.'

      Start a new chapter!

    3. Well, if Sir David says it's okay...

  4. Looking great there! The second one looks sort of like he's got a "pull-cord" type trigger going, which makes, well, about as much sense as you can expect from someone who's been driven mad by constantly hearing every lie spoken.

As much as I love Autocannon, 8th is actually the worst they've been for a long time. Against most of the common targets, a Lascannon is just short of twice as effective, on a per-gun basis, and there seem to be an increasing number of things that can either ignore AP-1 or reduce the damage taken from each hit by 1, either of which really puts a damper on the Autocannon's output.

Yeah, most games, the move and shoot ability is going to matter exactly once (Deploy out of LoS in case you get Seized on or are going second, then move out and open up), but occasionally the action ends up somewhere you didn't expect and they need to re-position later. Particularly useful for Squads with Heavy Bolters and/or Reaper Chain-cannon, with the shorter range. The inability to take extra ablative dudes really does hurt, tho, and the inability to interchange with the basic Squads is very annoying, yeah.

    1. Yes, that left arm does seem a bit strange on some of the classic over-the-shoulder heavy weapons. They have one posed as steadying the gun, which makes sense, but the rest have that 'clenched fist' look (or, in the case of the tactical squad, holding a knife, which I can't imagine is that useful for a missile launcher).

I'm interested to see how the Autocannons do. I agree the AP is problematic, but they have the same range at the Lascannons, so at least they can bulk out the unit with cheaper guns and still be at effective range. And with the Scourged's ability to Overwatch on 5+ or shoot at deepstrikers, I think a few guns with a decent rate of fire might come in handy.
