I Fyrd The Bells On Christmas Day

On the sixth day of Advent, the WoffBoot brought to me ... Six Anglos Saxoning!

I know 2016 is unlikely to be remembered fondly by history, but it looks like we're going to get through it without a second series of The Last Kingdom, so it could have been far, far worse...

Indeed, I'd say my biggest hobby regret of 2016 was letting SAGA:Viking Age fall by the wayside. It's a great skirmish game, with a cracking mechanic in the battle board, and I feel we'd only just lifted the lid on its potential.

Also, it might spur me on to paint more than six figures a year!

This is the other half of the levy unit of Geburs that I started last December.

I assembled and undercoated the whole unit at the same time, then divided them randomly to paint - but I think I prefer this half. They have better poses for the most part: their left arms aren't tucked tight into their torsos, which gave a flat-looking shield pose.

A couple are also leaning forward, which looks more dynamic (also, is it me, or does the guy with the axe and chequerboard shield look like a young Obi-Wan Kenobi?)

To the earthy Zandri Dust and dyestained Death World Forest and Elysian Green, I added a new brown for the tunics: XV88. Quite a nice addition too - when you're dealing with a self-imposed limited palette, you'll take what you can.

I really must make the effort to bash on with more of these - they take next to no time to finish (as evidenced by their place in this advent rush). And by picking Anglo-Saxons, I've saddled myself with another damn hoard army - I'll need at least another 30 before I'm done.

Even the shields worked out better this time (sort of). Although I sense the next batch will be repeating some of the designs - I've run low on variants and/or imagination.

So there you have it: you may drive your Chevy, secure in the knowledge that this Levy is no longer dry. Only a couple more to do now.

  1. Yeah, a game of SAGA would go down a treat about now. Is there still time?

    1. Ah, well I read this too late for a game *now*, but if you're still up for some battle boarding, let's find an hour to play before this Ýlir is done.
