Combat Spidey

Spider-powers, guns and a symbiote? Sign me up!

Marvel Crisis Protocol - Agent Venom

It's quite the roller-coaster being a background character in comics. You start off as a quarterback jock who enjoys bullying some nerd called Peter Parker; fifty years later, you've lost both your legs in combat and bonded with an alien symbiote to work for S.H.I.E.L.D.

Flash Thompson is Agent Venom, which is another take on the spider-template (simultaneously an original angle and the 'let's just give him guns and pouches' chestnut). On the table, he's an interesting mix of Spider-Man and Venom abilities, plus the ability to chuck the occasional grenade.

Painting-wise, it was just a case of drybrushing greys up from a black basecoat, then bringing it down with a wash of Nuln Oil. The symbiote tendrils got Black Legion contrast, which makes them look a bit more organic and slimy.

Eshin Grey and Dawnstone layers for the guns, with Ulthuan Grey picking out the white details. The ruin got a good drybrush of grey, then finished off with Karak Stone, so it looks more distinct from Flash himself.

The sculpt has really tried to add a bit of dynamism, having Flash leaping in the air while his symbiote tendrils do the actual supporting (I do hope it survives - it looks less sturdy than a lightning bolt!)

I wasn't too keen on the sculpt when I saw it on the box, but having got it in my hands, I really like it now. Probably the best symbiote model I've seen (and something to learn from if Venom ever gets a re-do).
