And Now ... The Scourged!

The Purge, you say? No, I'm not doing The Purge. This is The Scourged.

Try to keep up...

This is the other half of the Chaos Space Marines kit. As this was driven by a desire to paint them, I wanted to maximise the numbers of renegade colour schemes.

The fact that these are Tzeentch-aligned was just the icing on the cake. They have a great backstory too, so that justified the fact that they are three times harder to paint than The Purge.

The whole unit are Chosen, and kitted out with combi-bolters and chainswords (they can Overwatch on 5+, so that's enough firepower to sit up and take notice). Same kitbashing system as before: slap a couple of bolt weapons together.

The other ability The Scourged have is a free reroll to hit, which is enough incentive for me to overcharge a combi-plasma, so that's what the unit champion gets.

In painting terms, this was somewhere between Rubric Marines and Black Legion. So nothing I'm not used to, but it did take a bit more work to get through. The real kicker was having the freehand the Eye of Tzeentch on every pauldron - from now on, it's chapters that have decals only.

To round out the Vanguard detachment, a brace of shooty Helbrutes. These were a second-hand purchase, so no other options were available (sometimes it's nice to be relived of that decision) - but two lascannons and a missile launcher is a damn good load-out.

These were resprayed and fully repainted, but each one still took no longer than one of the new marines to complete.

That said, I should probably hold back from painting any more Helbrutes, as I now have five of them.

I can stop any time I want.

And finally, the HQ slot. I'm particularly proud of this one, as he's entirely made from things scavenged in my bitz box. Terminator Sorcerer head, Exalted Sorcerer torso, arms and staff, Chaos Space Marine back and pistol, New Chaos Space Marine pauldrons, Rubric Marine backpack and loincloth, Raptor feet, and High Elf parachute pants.

Can't touch this.

Having non-astartes legs made him on the short side, so I got around that by sticking him on a space Inceptor stand, which gives him a levitating look (I guess he could pass for a jump-pack sorcerer, but doesn't have the backpack for it).

So that's The Scourged all done! There is actually a motive to me speed-painting random detachments of renegades. All to be revealed...

  2. Excellent stuff! You must be getting tired of all that armour trim, though.

    1. When a man is tired of armour trim, he is tired of life!

... and then I guess he joins The Purge.

Who, conveniently, have no armour trim.

  3. Looking great! And 5 Helbrutes is nothing to worry about. You don't have a problem until your Dreads of all varieties start hitting the mid double digits range ;) I love when I manage to put something together out of random bits and it actually works out. And even more so when it's not just a Chaos Spawn.

    1. Yes, much as i enjoy them, Chaos Spawn is kitbashing on easy mode. This Sorcerer was more rewarding.
