After painting a lot of Imperial Guard and Space Marines, I really wanted a palette cleanser

"What da zog just ran over me?"

As if by magic...

Rapid kindly offered me a set of Malign Sorcery - the starter box of Endless Spells for Age of Sigmar - and I snapped it up.

It turns out it was just the painting excursion I was looking for - there were all assembled and painted in less than a week!

All very simple techniques, and quick to do, but enjoyable and effective.

Mr Grey Will See You Now

The Soulsnare Shackles were silver drybushed over black, with Typhus Corrosion and a Ryza Rust drybrush.

Burning sensation in your forehead?

The Burning Head was fire effects - Lamenter's Yellow with deeper colours added with Iyanden Yellow, Magmadroth Orange and Blood Angels Red.

Bugs' life

A wash of Biel-Tan Green for the Emerald Lifeswarm with the bug bodies picked out with Militarum Green and Skeleton Horde for the skull.

Cogs up

For the Chronomantic Cogs, I drybrushed silver over black, then washed with Nazdreg Yellow and Snakebite Leather, which gave a nice brassy look. The spooky glow was Tesseract Glow over Ulthuan Grey.

The Fairest Of Them All

My favourite effect was on the Umbral Spellportal - a heavy wash of Coelia Greenshade (which I left to dry lying down, so it pooled in the right place), and a drybush of Ulthuan Grey. The gold effects was just Retributor Armour with a Reikland Flesh wash.

The Billiard Balls of Destiny

My diminishing supply of Gulliman Blue glaze was used for the Geminids of Uhl-Ghysh. The white one was picked out with Ulthuan Grey (and a thinner Gulliman Blue), and the black one with Black Templar (drybrushed Russ Grey).

Son of the Purple Sun

The Malevolent Maelstrom is the only model I've painted before and while the magic effect was just Nihilakh Oxide with an Ulthuan Grey drybrush, I went back and forth on the central vortex. Starting with Shyish Purple contrast, the Ulthuan Grey drybrush, then a coat of Nihilakh Oxide, then a wahs of Druchi Violent and then another drybrush - we got there eventually.

Ghost of Errol Flynn

Quicksilver Swords was drybrushed silver over black, Nazdreg Yellow over the hilts and Volpus Pink over Ulthuan Grey for the swirls.

Edgar Allan's Hoe

Aethervoid Pendulum was also drybrushed silver over black, with the details picked out with Drakenhof Nightshade. The flames were a heavy drybrushes of Khorne Red, Evil Suns Red and Troll Slayer Orange. 

The Privet Hedge of Solitude

The Prismatic Palisade was a simple as Lamenter's Yellow over white, with Ulthuan Grey drybrushing in the middle of the crystals.

The Molehill of the Covenant

The Suffocating Gravetide is practically a terrain piece, so that was just Zandri Dust with a Reikland Fleshshade wash, then drybrushes of Karak Stone, Eldar Flesh and Terminatus Stone. The skills were while with Aethermatic Blue contrast.

Flamin' hot cheetah

A good portion of Iyanden Yellow was enough for Ravenak’s Gnashing Jaws - that contrast paint is a marvel. Bleached Bone and Seraphim Sepia for the teeth and it's good to go!

The Little Coronavirus That Could

And the main event - the Purple Sun of Shyish (Xereus, it will always be Xereus). Unlike many of the other spells, which were fantastically easy to build, this was more of a challenge to create a spiky sphere that needed to be pressed together.

Painting it was significantly easier - a heavy drybrush of Xereus Purple (told you so), followed by lighter drybrushing of Genestealer Purple, Celestra Grey and Ulthuan Grey.

I don't know these Endless Spells operate in Age of Sigmar, but my kids have already played them in a 14-wizard battle-royale and it was an absolute hoot! Much more of these please.
