And it's Good Knight from Him

Second commission done!

This summer's theme has been magnets. Of course this monstrous brute has some - carapace weapons and main guns galore. It's the fifth of the Knights in this job lot and by far the biggest, something like three or four times as large as the others - it's either a Valiant or a Castellan! (Or a Dominus, if the owner is feeling spiky.)

Each of these arm cannons is roughly as big as your average Ogryn. Not much less detailed, either, although the scale of the model helped me deal with this. Tiny weeny coolant pipes they may have, but they're tiny and weeny on the Titan scale, no worse than painting a shield rim on a viking in a less adventurous setting.

Being a member of House Kasfunatu, it's got a ruined badlands base. The extra set dressing today is a bit of extra tombstone (spare from the old GW graveyard set, before it got renamed and trebled in price) and a half-buried embalming fluid canister.

This was made by cutting a plastic sweets container in half diagonally and then supergluing it down before I put the sand on. It's full of water effect resin, the green pond one from Krycell, and it only leaked a bit. That stuff is a devil to use, it seems to seep out and escape from almost everything. Makes up for it once dry, though.

Crypt Angels iconography, because the last Knights didn't get much. A snarling mouth across the helmet, and a nice groin flag. Best place to advertise your allegiance, the groin.

With shoulder pads that size to fill, I kind of felt obliged to try some freehand. This particular knight's name is Vespillo. For those of you who didn't need a pauper's grave c. 400 A.D., that's a late Latin lowly gravedigger/undertaker. You can take your pick which is the better translation - either way, I tried to do a sinister misty graveyard scene across the pauldrons. My presentation is hampered as ever by my super-average photography, but you can hopefully at least tell what it is.

Painting Guide:

  • Black Armour - Black basecoat, layered with Eshin Grey and Dawnstone
  • Brass Armour Trim - Warplock Bronze layered with Brass Scorpion and Runelord, then washed with Agrax Gloss
  • Silver - Plate Mail Silver, Nuln Oil Gloss wash, Plate Mail Silver Layer, Shining Silver highlights
  • Red - Khorne Red, Drakenhof Nightshade, Wazdakka Red layer, Wild Rider Red edge highlights
  • Yellow Plasma - Averland Sunset, Agrax, then Flash Gits Yellow blended up with White
  • Lenses - Black, Ultramarine Blue (the Army Painter one, not the original one), Electric Blue, Voidshield Blue, White dot
  • Base - the usual Iron Oxide powder with sand, a bit of Monster Brown and Desert Yellow drybrushing, Wasteland Tufts here and there
  • Broken Concrete - Skavenblight Dinge, Strong Tone wash, Dawnstone and Terminatus Stone drybrushes
  • Transfers - from the new Knights sheet and the old Imperial Transports sheet. All given a coat of Lahmium Medium to remove shine
  • The Graveyard Scene - Dark Reaper base, layered down with black for shadowy bits and up with Dawnstone for lighter bits. Eshin Grey for gravestones, plain Black for background hills, trees and shadowy ruins. Dark Reaper layered up with white for the clouds, done with several very thin and watery layers, then same shade mixed with Lahmium Medium for the nearer clouds
  • Moonglow - Celestra Grey mixed with lots of White and a spot of Electric Blue. It also led me straight to you

Valiant configuration, the short-ranged harpoon one

Castellan configuration, the long-ranged mighty gun turret one

Right - that's all the commissions done for now! There's another much much smaller one coming later in the year for Stylus, and you'll get no prizes for guessing whether it's terrain or not. But my painting time is now my own for a bit. So what's next?

Next - Warcry doesn't exist, so I can't buy it.

  1. That has to be the best fanged maw you've done so far (and Terra knows, you've done a lot of them).

Pure artistry on the bases, as always.
